Man from UNCLE

Have you seen the movie, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.? It’s the movie that won me over in 2015. And, as far as 2016 is looking for movies so far, it’s still holding out as my fave. I love the entire movie, yet it’s one particular scene that really ensnared me. But how does a movie ensnare someone? For that matter, what do I even mean by the phrase ensnared by a movie? Whether or not you’ve seen the movie, let me tell you more. Not to mention, that you should really watch this scene!

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. | What do I Mean by Ensnared?

When I say ‘ensnared’ I don’t mean that it may necessarily turn out to be your favorite. I mean that it captures your attention in such a way, that you find yourself thinking about it at the most random of times. The clincher though, is that it becomes dear to you and, whether you realize it or not, the storyline and its execution has succeeded on provoking in you the feelings of the characters; their emotions are now felt by you too!

Do you know what I’m talking about?…that entrancing combination a movie scene can have of the music, lighting, the acting and dialogue of the characters (typically kept minimal for such scenes), and the angles and style in which it’s shot…because when that is done so tastefully and so well, it sticks with you! And I mean, sticks with you, in that amorous way of filling your awareness when you didn’t go searching for it. Yeah, you walked out of the movie theater or turned off your screen, yet even as more time passes you only feel like the story pulls you in more and more.

You find yourself seeking out the song and even the soundtrack because you just have to hear and feel it again. That you don’t even need to ‘watch it’ because when you hear it, you have to move and you find yourself moving like the characters did…seeing them in your mind. Soon, you desire to be in the story itself and the romance of it feels so utterly intoxicating, you replay it in your mind over and over again; you dance it again and again. You sing it and learn the words. You somehow feel like you’re one of the characters themselves.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. | How a Movie Ensnares You

In the case of The Man from U.N.L.C.E., I just love love love the sense of nostalgic romance of the era it’s set in; the lightheartedness and silly fun that this particular scene evokes, and how it gives depth to the characters. You feel like you get to see how they deal with life, which in this case turns out to be by loosening up with a drink, some dancing, and…I’d tell more but don’t want to spoil it for you – you just have to watch the scene below (and, I recommend, the whole movie). I like how it’s also a bit surprising and as the scene starts you’re not sure what to expect. It fits well with the overall storyline’s tone of humor, adventure and the idea that down-to-earth quirkiness can exist even with something as serious as espionage and spies.

Now that I’m writing this down, I realize that, at least for me, a movie that ensnares me does so with a scene that has some good dialogue, yet it’s minimal. And the power lies in the music track and how it’s interwoven with the camera style and angles. But overall, music is very important. And, again in my case, some kind of dancing is usually a major part of the scene.

THAT’S how a movie can ensnare you. It takes just one amazingly, well-done scene. In The Man from U.N.C.L.E., this is that scene.

If you like the scene, and/or the movie, I highly recommend you enjoy the soundtrack as well. Great tunes. And keep your eyes open for a possible sequel, although there’s nothing set in stone…yet!

Okay, so what do you think of this movie and this scene? What movie scenes have ensnared you and why?
